Some Tips On Laptop Battery Charging

laptop battery chargingIf you are using your laptop for extended periods away from an outside power source, it is important to extend the battery life as long as possible. If you want to lengthen the time between laptop battery charging sessions, there are some things that you can do. Running out of power to operate your laptop in the middle of a key sales presentation is frustrating and could be costly. Here are some tips to help conserve battery life in your laptop.

]When you first get your laptop, the battery may or may not be fully charged. Even if the charge was complete, it may have sat around in the warehouse or on store shelves for a time. You should find and follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for the first battery usage.

Check the power settings that will be displayed on the computer. These settings are likely to be set for great display and fast response rather than for optimizing the life of the battery charge. You can look for such settings as the screen brightness settings. The necessity for a bright screen will vary according to where the laptop is being used. Usually in bright indoor light or sunlight, the screen brightness must be set relatively high in order to see the images on the screen.

The processing speed of your CPU can be set at low to high on some laptops. Unless you are in a hurry for a response, the processing speed for normal calculations doesn’t have to be set at the highest level. On the other hand, the difference in power usage between one level and the next highest or lowest is probably not going to be appreciable.

Cooling the laptop will also require more power when you are in a warm room than when you are in an air-conditioned area. It takes power to run the cooling fans, especially if they are starting and stopping constantly. You can set them at mid range for most situations, but recharging more often is probably better than dealing with an overheated laptop.

Powered shut downs are another area where you will need to look at the factory settings on your laptop. If you shut off the monitor, shut down the hard drive or put the laptop on system standby after only a few minutes of non use, you may not save that much power and it could be harder on the equipment than it should be.

In the end, it’s a trade off between the number of charges that you want to do on the laptop or notebook and the ease with which your equipment does the job that you want it to do. Do you want your DVDs to play with no stumbles or hitches? Do you want to lose the video on the midst of a sales presentation? You will probably get some variance from the type of usage that you make of the laptop, but look for the optimum settings for the work that you intend to do.

Try to time your laptop battery charging for a time when you would not be normally processing materials. If you perform automatic tasks such as defragging, do those while hooked up to an external power source. With some forethought, you can make your important information less at risk of loss due to battery failure.
